Montgolfier brothers
(Joseph de Montgolfier; Etienne de Montgolfier)
   inventors and industrialists
Joseph de Montgolfier (1740-1810) and Etienne de Montgolfier (1745-99) managed the family paper business in Vidalon-les-Annonay, where they were born. Etienne introduced the Dutch process of paper milling and vellum to France, and Joseph invented filter paper. Together, after 1782, the Montgolfier brothers invented and experimented with the first practical hot-air balloons, known as montgolfières. They made their well-known ascents with paper-lined linen balloons, first at Annonay and then, in September 1783, at Versailles in the presence of King louis XVI and Queen marie Antoinette. Ingenious inventors, the Montgolfier brothers also conceived the idea of a hydraulic device (1792) that could convey water. Etienne was named to the academy of sciences in 1796, and Joseph was named in 1807.
